When the camera crews and the actors started showing up around here, there were some murmurs. After all, Hollywood has not always rendered a flattering portrayal of us "hillbillies," or Appalachians, if you prefer. You can imagine a murmuring of wry skepticism when director McG and company descended upon Huntington, West Virginia, with the announcement that they were going to make the story of the 1970 Marshall University football team plane crash into a movie. After all, this wasn't just another movie set in West Virginia. This was in essence "our story."

At the turn of the eighteenth century, a young woman with a thirst for life and a mind and passion for the written word refused to follow the typical way of life that women at the time were expected to uphold. Jane Austen did not want to marry a suitor based on the depths of his pockets or the amount of money he would inherit. Instead, she vowed that she would live by her pen rather than enter into a loveless marriage that was more like a business transaction than a unity of two people. Refusing many admirers, Jane kept to her convictions and to her love of writing. However, un-benounced to her, a young man by the name of Tom Langlois Lefroy would soon enter her life, and his acquaintance would change Jane and her writing forever.

A remarkable film that premiered at this year�s CineVegas film festival was �La Vie En Rose,� the ultimate rags to riches biographical story of Edith Piaf, an early 20th century French singer. The film was beautifully portrayed with an unforgettable Oscar- worthy performance by Marion Cotillard, who was the incarnation of the late singer. Cotillard, who skillfully lip-synced Piaf�s famous ballads not only physically transformed into her, but brought the singer�s spirit, soul, passion and the tragedies she endured to life.

I recently had the delightful pleasure of being invited to a screening of SickoSicko is the latest documentary from Academy Award Winning director, Michael Moore.  Although Moore is painted as the personification of a modern day rebel and saint, his latest film regarding the U.S. healthcare system, proves to be his most heartfelt and pure film.
